Innovative Leaders in the Global Fashion Supply Chain

Where students learn both the art and
science of the fashion industry!

Chair Message

It has been a quite transforming semester. The Provost announced earlier in 2021 that the Department of Textile and Apparel Management will be under the leadership of the College of Arts and Sciences effective on July 1, 2021. The TAM faculty, staff and students are looking forward to being part of the largest college on campus. TAM has been known as the “Innovative Leaders in the Global Fashion Supply Chain: Where students learn both the art and science of the fashion industry!” and, with this change, TAM will now truly become part of the arts and sciences communities. See more from here.

TAM Student Highlights

A TAM doctoral student, Cydni Robertson, received Fulbright U.S. Student Research Award in 2020. This award will support Cydni to travel to El Salvador to conduct dissertation research in Santa Ana and San Salvador, El Salvador to learn more about gender inequality amongst professionals in the Salvadoran textile and apparel manufacturing industries, and more specifically, how have these inequalities been influenced by the Central America and Dominican Republic Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA-DR). She will work with educators and industry professionals in El Salvador.

Two of our product development students were chosen to participate in this year’s Visual Art and Design Showcase (please see stories about Ruiyao Yuan and Tyler Reeder).

TAM Program Highlights

TAM launched a one-of-a-kind Certificate in Digital Merchandising for undergraduate students. This new degree will meet ever-changing industry’s needs in digital commerce. Please find out more from the requirements.

Even during the pandemic, the 90% of the students who responded to Career Outcome Survey indicated that they have secured jobs. Please find out more survey from Career Outcomes Survey.

Students learned so much from the speaker event “Looking to the Future: Envisioning Sustainability and Transparency in Today’s Fashion Supply Chain” organized by Drs. Zhao and McBee-Black. Speakers from the all over the world shared their wisdom and knowledge with TAM students.

TAM’s well known Industry Advisory Board grew by several new members and TAM alumna Jasmine Diane kicked off the first ever Young Alumni Speaker Series this semester!

Message from Association of Textile and Apparel Management (ATAM)

From Rebecca Potje, the President of ATAM: During the Spring 2021 semester, ATAM has held various meetings and events. In February, two recruiters from UNIQLO came to speak about the company’s opportunities for employment. In March, ATAM held our first social of the semester at Three Story Coffee in downtown Columbia. First, both Jerica Leiby and Reshma Danak came and spoke about their careers in sourcing. The second meeting was a resume and cover letter workshop with Jaime Mestres and Nicolette Leiby. Also, Lisa Hu, founder and designer of Lux & Nyx, came to speak at our meeting about her entrepreneurial and designer journey, as well as her insight on the industry today. ATAM will be holding elections for the 2021- 2022 school year in the coming weeks, and the executive board is excited for an interactive, in-person semester in the Fall!
