SEPTEMBER 2021

Message from the Director

Resilient.

More than any other word, ‘resilient’ is the one that best describes the School of Natural Resources (SNR) over the last year. The restrictions imposed by the COVID pandemic are now all too familiar, and our SNR students, staff and faculty spent the last year beset by those limitations. Even so, we adapted to Zoom sessions well enough to proceed with classes, and special events such as our 2021 Albrecht Earth Day Lecture that focused on Indigenous reciprocal relationships with the land and soil; featured speakers were Dr. Jaquetta Shade-Johnson and Ed Smith. That same resilience and technical know-how allowed our SNR alumni group to host a virtual edition of Trivia in the Wild, which continued to raise funds for SNR scholarships.

Research Achievements

Researchers at the University of Missouri and the University of Georgia recently published a paper related to an underutilized source of resistance in the soybean genotype Peking. That source is linked to two polymorphisms in serine hydroxyl-methyltransferase 8 (SHMT8). SHMT is an enzyme important for folate-mediated 1-carbon metabolism, a universal metabolic process. David Korasick, a postdoctoral fellow who was part of the John Tanner lab and mentored by Tanner, Lesa Beamer and Melissa Mitchum, produced five crystal structures of different states of the SHMT8 tetramers from the SCN-susceptible and SCN-resistant cultivar. He combined protein biochemistry, protein biophysics and X-ray crystallography approaches to tackle the problem.
