Dear Arts and Science Alumni and Friends, I am excited to share with you our new Arts and Science newsletter. One of my favorite features is our Student Success profiles. Future editions will also include alumni profiles. I can think of no greater evidence of the power of an Arts and Science education than to learn about the accomplishments, and challenges, of our alumni and students. These are inspiring stories, and we look forward to sharing them with you. If you have ideas for an alumni profile, please let us know! I also hope you will keep an eye out for the spring edition of the Mizzou Magazine, which will feature a full spread of my (and yours, I hope) favorite college: Mizzou’s College of Arts and Science. Pat Okker Dean, College of Arts and Science

Thank you, Bailey Martin! Bailey, a History and Constitutional Democracy major, was interviewed by the Columbia Daily Tribune about her service as a poll worker. We are so proud of our students who volunteered to help staff polling places this year so that more vulnerable people could stay safe. Read more about Bailey and the other volunteers here.

MU’s Artist in Residence, an A&S program that invites established and emerging artists to celebrate the arts and cultivate creativity across disciplines, returned to campus this fall with "In Focus: Poetry." The six-day event featured work by Mizzou Made creatives to illuminate walls around campus. Read more about the art installations here. Watch full-length versions of the poems here. Shang Xu, an undergraduate majoring in mathematics and minoring in economics, has always had a knack for math. Learn about his drive to become the youngest member of the Society of Actuaries. Here's an update to the original story: Xu passed his 7th (and first fellowship exam) actuarial exam in September 2020. This is a record at MU and may be a record nationwide among undergraduate students, given the timeframe this was accomplished. Shang also won the Actuary of Tomorrow–Stuart A. Robertson Memorial Scholarship, Curtis E. Huntington Memorial Scholarship, and the Central States Actuarial Forum Scholarship.
