HMIAO President Address

Hello, fellow alum, I am Tim Kephart (BS '11, MHA '13) and serving as the MU Health Management & Informatics Alumni Organization (HMIAO) President. I was an MU student-athlete (Wrestling) and a long-time Columbia, MO resident. After graduating from the executive program, I moved to the KCMO area with my wife and three teens. I’ve had an exciting career and now work for an Orthopedic management network.

I am truly blessed to work with the dedicated Alumni working on your behalf. Our primary mission is to support the program at large. This includes the Department, current students, and of course our alumni. Our group supports a number of ongoing fundraising efforts, student and alumni events, and works to bring value to being an HMI graduate. We hope you have noticed our communications on LinkedIn spotlighting some of our accomplished peers. It is great to see everyone’s professional achievements.

In 2023 we will continue to strive to support you and the program. We will also focus on ensuring that your representative reflects our alumni's diversity and professional paths. We are always looking for feedback and support so please reach out and get engaged.

As the faces change on our board, I wanted to recognize the immense efforts of several members that served the organization over the past few years. Lindsey Lehman, Michelle McClay, and our immediate Past President Alex Gill. All these members have shown unwavering dedication and put in countless hours.

I hope to see you at any upcoming events and please feel free to reach out via our LinkedIn Group;  Mizzou Department of Health Management and Informatics Alumni.

Miz!

Successful 2022 Internship Placements

& 2023 Challenges

With significant support from HMI Alumni, the 2022 Summer Internship placements were a huge success. Organizations participating in the summer experience included Cox Health, HCA Center Point, Boone Health, Capital Region, Truman VA, University of Utah, MU Health Care, The Resource Group, St. Luke’s North, Great Rivers Health System, Randolph County Caring Community, Mayo Clinic, Netsmart, Missouri Telehealth Network, University Health KC, Align Technologies, Methodist Health, Stormont Vail, Lake Regional Health System, and Penn Medicine.

We would especially like to thank Ashley Casad, Christopher Schulze, Marcy Maddox, Matt Waterman, Mirna Becevic, Shaun Custard, and Tracy O’Rourke for providing internships for summer 2022!

Organizational sponsorship and mentoring are ongoing needs of the program. Although MHA placements are largely complete for Summer 2023, there are a number of Health Informatics (MS) students who are still needing to be placed for 2023.  If you or your organization are interested in hosting a health informatics student for 2023 or would like to sponsor an MHA/MS student in 2024, please contact Rick Sommer at sommerr@health.missouri.edu.

A Summer at Mayo Clinic

“I was privileged to spend twelve weeks in the summer of 2022 interning at Mayo Clinic’s original Saint Mary’s Campus in Rochester, Minnesota within the Department of Surgery (DOS). I spent most of my time engaging and leading project work within various DOS divisions including Breast and Melanoma Surgical Oncology, Colon and Rectal Surgery, and the Center for Aesthetic Medicine and Surgery.

While working in the DOS, I was a part of many projects, one of which included a process improvement initiative intended to improve the patient experience for dual BMSO-Plastic Surgery cases. Through my work, I gained invaluable experience in change management and stakeholder engagement and learned how to thrive in the ambiguity of healthcare. I feel privileged to have been able to have the experience of learning and growing from a world-class healthcare leader, and I enjoy applying my experiences last summer to my work within the classroom at Mizzou HMI.”

HMI Advisory Board Updates

The HMI Advisory Board continues to grow and refine its purpose and strategic approach to assisting the HMI Department. This year's meeting at Fall Institute focused on ways in which the Advisory Board can be helpful to the goals of the Department; strengthening our partnership with alumni and student leaders; School of Medicine advancement; and cutting edge topics such as Cultural Competency/Implicit Bias Impacts on Healthcare Outcomes and Environmental, Social and Governmental concerns for publicly traded organizations and perhaps for nonprofits. Those of us in attendance at ACHE will be meeting to discuss development efforts within HMI.

HMI Education Programs Update

Mizzou MS Health Informatics students Mary Dickson-Amagada, Mitesh Rajpurohit, and Jessica Osaze were selected as GradsWrite Leaders this spring 2023 semester. GradsWrite is a writing support program coordinated by the Graduate School. Now in its fifth year, groups meet weekly in a shared space to focus on setting and meeting writing goals, with an emphasis on accountability and support.

Mizzou second year MHA students (David Meyerhoff, Tom Schaeffler, & Aleks Shin) are participating in the 2023 University of Alabama at Birmingham Health Administration Case Competition, February 22 - 24 in Birmingham, AL.

Mizzou first year MHA students (Conner Flatt, Remington Park, & Thomas Simmons) are participating in the Third Annual Sloan Program in Health Administration Case Competition (Cornell University) this year sponsored by SSM Health.

Approximately 180 graduate students call HMI their academic home. There are 74 executive MHA students, 24 executive MS students, 47 residential MHA students, and 35 residential MS students.

In addition, there are several students pursuing Graduate Certificate programs in Health Informatics, Healthcare Project Management, Health Ethics, and Informatics for Public Health.

EXECUTIVE PROGRAM UPDATE

The December 2022 graduating class live and work across Missouri, Arkansas, California, Texas, and Wisconsin. Their backgrounds reflect every part of the healthcare industry, including physicians, nurses, pharmacists, chiropractors, therapists, technicians, and non-clinical professionals from healthcare finance, technology, quality improvement, business services, and more. We could not be prouder of these current and future healthcare leaders who chose to study with Mizzou HMI.

The 32 graduates included 26 MHA, 3 MS, and 3 dual MHA/MS. At the graduation celebration and recognition on December 10 at the State Historical Society of Missouri, engraved desk wedges were presented to all graduates. The Thomas P. Weil Award was presented to Derel Helderman. The Bonnie and Douglas Wakefield Award was presented to Troy Lambert and Andrea Wilson. Twenty-nine students were inducted into Upsilon Phi Delta. Brandy Johnson was selected by the Graduate School to serve as the Masters Graduation Marshall.

January brought in shiny new cohorts of MHA and MS students beginning our Executive programs! We look forward to opportunities to bring them together with our engaged alumni throughout their time at Mizzou HMI.
