Mizzou Grad News

I mizzou grad student, studying at an outdoor table, while wearning a Mizzou jacket.

Welcome to the January Issue of Mizzou Grad News.

For those new to your graduate programs, welcome to Mizzou. For those continuing their programs, welcome back to the start of the spring semester. We are introducing a new design for the newsletter this month and will continue to improve the design over the semester. We hope these changes will increase readership and access to resources to support graduate education.

By Presidential Proclamation, January is National Mentoring Month. Many of you mentor peers, undergraduate students, and others. We acknowledge and celebrate you this month and always. I hope you will also take time this month to thank all mentors who have shaped your experience. We are excited to launch an enhanced mentor training program on campus that will be available to faculty. Last semester, 30 MU faculty and staff participated in a 2-day intensive workshop to become trained facilitators of a mentoring curriculum. As we increase mentoring capacity on campus, we will also have sessions to introduce evidence-based mentoring skills to interested graduate students.

I want to publicly thank Associate Dean Lissa Behm-Morawitz for her service to the Graduate School since 2017. Dr. Behm-Morawitz is moving to a new administrative role in the Department of Communication in July. In the interim, she will work on several research projects and continue teaching the Preparing Future Faculty course. Dr. Behm-Morawitz’s last day is January 31, and we are currently searching for a new associate dean. While with the Graduate School, Dr. Behm-Morawitz has been essential in:

growing two signature postdoctoral programs and hiring a director of postdoctoral education,
overseeing our internal fellowship and award processes,
envisioning (and hiring) a new position to support graduate students and postdoctoral scholars as they apply for external awards and fellowships,
mentoring and advising students,
caring deeply about student well-being, and
providing professional development for directors of graduate studies and department/program contacts, among many other accomplishments.

She has truly made a positive impact on graduate education at Mizzou, and she will be missed.

I hope you enjoy the remainder of the newsletter. Stay well, and best wishes.

All the best,

Jeni Hart, PhD

Dean of the Graduate School

Vice Provost for Graduate Studies
