Mizzou Grad News

Katherine Vickers Meiser, a black female student working in a lab, pouring liquid into a beaker

Welcome to the February issue of Mizzou Grad News.

I hope you are finding time to take advantage of all the events celebrating Black History Month and will continue to reflect on, learn from, and cite the substantial contributions to research and creative works that African Americans and all those who are part of the Black diaspora have made and continue to make. Of course, these activities are important to celebrate throughout the year, not only in February.

I recommend signing up for daily updates from InsideHigherEd.com and The Chronicle of Higher Education. Both are free and provide information about what is happening in higher education. Both also include job postings, as well as career advice. Recently, InsideHigherEd.com featured Advice on Academic Journal Submission, which includes insights from a journal editor about the publication process. Both provide helpful resources that complement the critical mentorship of faculty.

If you are a PhD student, you will receive information soon from your program’s DGS prompting you to enter and/or update the activities form with your accomplishments (e.g., reporting applications for awards and fellowships, honors received, publications, presentations, installations, performances), and submit your self-report in MyVita. All information should be submitted by March 24, 2023. The self-report will serve to inform the conversation you have with your advisor about your annual academic progress. All other graduate students are also required to be reviewed annually. Contact your department/program for information about those processes.

If you hold a graduate assistantship, this year the performance review will also be completed using MyVita—this is true for all doctoral, master’s, and specialist students with an assistantship this academic year. Students are not required to complete a self-report for this process. Supervisors should complete their evaluations between March 25 and May 5, 2023.

Until next month,

dean of the graduate school

vice provost for graduate studies

Support for Graduate Students

Graduate/Nontraditional Student Support Group, Thursdays 2-3:30 p.m.

Facilitated by Dr. Jenny Lybeck-Brown and Dr. Anne Meyer, this support group for graduate and nontraditional students aims at building a supportive community while dealing with the unique life stressors associated with graduate and nontraditional students. Typical topics include creating a balance between school, personal, and work demands; finding and maintaining motivation and momentum, including dissertation or thesis difficulties; dealing with time management, perfectionism, imposter syndrome, procrastination, and advisor conflict. If you are interested in participating, you can call the MUCC to set up a “Brief Screening” appointment and express interest in the group at that appointment.  It is possible to join on a rolling basis as long as there is room in the group. The support group is offered every semester.

Graduate Writing Support at the Writing Center

The Writing Center can support your course-based or non-course-based writing throughout your time at Mizzou. You can schedule 50-minute appointments to meet with Graduate Writing Support tutors on campus or via Zoom, and you can also submit work to them online for written feedback, all at writingcenter.missouri.edu. The service is completely free. They support your writing process, from brainstorming through final drafts! Contact them at writingcenter@missouri.edu with any questions.

Filing taxes this year?

Office for Financial Success VITA Tax Prep Site

The Office for Financial Success (OFS) will host a VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) site at 162 Stanley Hall in February. Students (U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents) can use MU Connect to schedule an appointment for free tax preparation from tax-certified OFS peer financial coaches. Appointments open on Feb 15 and run through Apr 14.

To access services, log into MU Connect, search for "Financial Success," then select the "Financial Success Tax Preparation" tile.

If you are an International Student - Check your tax status!

International students need to know if they have nonresident tax status or are considered U.S. tax residents for the year 2022. If you are unsure of your tax status for 2022, you may send an inquiry to umsharedservicesu1@umsystem.edu. International students should also have received an email from the International Center recently with tax information.
